History

Early in 1988, four Kay cousins, James E. Kay, William Don Kay, Jeremiah A. Kay, and Franklin A. Spearman, published "The Descendants of Robert Kay of South Carolina". A massive volume, it recorded the lineage of several thousand Kays and represented the authors' combined research on the history of the family. Soon after its distribution, it became apparent that the new publication had rekindled interest in the Robert Kay family history. Family members promptly began to send additions, corrections, and amplifications fo the authors. By the end of the year, the need for a formal organization uniting the descendants of Robert Kay of South Carolina became obvious, and the Robert Kay Family Association was formed.

Purpose

The Robert Kay Family Association was formally founded in October 1988 as a non-profit organization devoted to assembling and preserving genealogical and historical materials pertaining to the Kay Family. The research is primarily devoted to the family of Robert Kay, Sr (born ca 1725 - died 1808) of South Carolina. A direct result of that research has been publication of five major volumes documenting the descendants and ancestors of Robert Kay. To further encourage participation by family members, the Association has hosted national family reunions attended by several hundred Kay family members from all across the country. The Association has also organized trips to England to visit the ancestral home of the Kay family.

Membership

Membership in the Association is open to all persons connected with the Kay Family, whether by blood, marriage, or adoption, and to persons dedicated to genealogical research. Membership falls into three classes: Active, Contributing, and Sustaining. Active Membership dues are $5.00 per year; contributing Membership dues are $10.00 per year; and Sustaining Membership dues are any amount over $10.00 that the member wishes to contribute for the support of the Association.

Newsletter

The Kay Quarterly is published in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. All members receive the newsletter as it is published. Back issues are available for $1.00 each for members of the Association. The Kay Quarterly is 3-hole punched for notebook binder and the page numbers are continuous from issue to issue. Code numbers for individuals referred to in the Kay Quarterly correspond with those in the book "The Descendants of Robert Kay, 2nd Ed.".

Activities

The Robert Kay Family Association continually sponsors projects and activities  supported by its 700-plus members. Past activities include two National Kay Family Reunions, the first held in 1991 and the second in 1995, both at Clemson, SC. The three day events were attended by several hundred persons. Tour groups of Association members have twice made the trip overseas to Bury, England to visit their ancestral home. Several abandoned cemeteries have been restored and are now regularly maintained. Five books of genealogical data on the Robert Kay family have been published. On-going projects include efforts to submit Kay genealogy to the Church of Latter Day Saints, erect a memorial marker at an abandoned Kay cemetery, and investigate the possiblities of a DNA study on Kay family members.
